Best Home Blood Pressure Monitors

best home blood pressure monitors

High blood pressure is one of the leading factors in heart attacks and strokes. As we age, the need to monitor our blood pressure increases. People over 40 years of age should have their pressure monitored at least once a year. If you have a family history, it should be monitored more closely. High blood pressure is more common in men earlier on, whereas women tend to develop this condition in their mid 60s.

The scary part about high blood pressure is the fact that there are virtually no symptoms. Some people with extremely high blood pressure may experience nose bleeds, headaches or shortness of breath. If this is the case, you should seek professional help, as you may be experiencing life-threatening high levels.

So besides going to the doctor, where can you go to monitor your pressure? A good place to go is your local pharmacy. Free blood pressure machines are common in a lot of pharmacies. Just remember to read the instructions carefully in order to get the most accurate reading possible. Getting your pressure checked on one of these machines doesn’t replace your visit to the doctor, but its a good way to monitor levels in between check ups.

So what if you don’t live near a pharmacy, or, have a hard time getting around? The answer is a home blood pressure monitor. Good home blood pressure monitors are relatively inexpensive and are very convenient to have, particularly if you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Once again these are not meant as a replacement for your regular check up.

Things to Look For

There are basically two types of monitors, the wrist monitor and the cuff monitor. The wrist monitor is not considered to be as accurate as the cuff monitor because the reading should be taken at heart level. Wrist monitors are sometimes the only option for some people, as the cuff monitor may hurt their arm, or their arm may not fit in the cuff.

There are essentially two different types of cuff monitors, the Aneroid model and the Digital model. The Aneroid model is the older style, in which you use a bulb to squeeze the air into the cuff. After the cuff is inflated, you check the pressure by reading the gauge. Aneroid models are the least expensive, but also the easiest type to damage.

Digital monitors are more expensive than their Aneroid counterparts, but are more durable and easier to use. The readout is in an easy to read digital display. Some digital monitors allow you to inflate the cuff yourself, however most are self inflating. A lot of digital monitors keep a memory of previous measurements, which you can save to your smart phone, while some others allow you to have a paper printout.

Best Drip Coffee Makers

best drip coffee makers

For many of us, that first cup of coffee is essential to getting the day off to a good start. But what makes a good cup of coffee? Obviously your favorite brand of coffee is one. Another is the coffee maker that you use. Some people prefer a traditional coffee maker that has a hot plate, while others prefer a thermal carafe, while even others prefer no carafe at all.

Either way, we all want our coffee to be just the way we want it. This article will show you the best drip coffee makers. It will show you what to look for when buying one, as well as things to avoid. You want to be provided with the best information, so that you can make an informed choice when purchasing your new coffee maker.

Tip: “If you want to make an even more informed choice, read the reviews from people that have bought that particular product. You will be able to find out what features people like and don’t like about the item. On Amazon, the reviews link is right beside the star rating.”

Things to Look For

When buying a coffee maker there are many factors that need to be considered. A lot of these factors will be determined based on personal preference as well as one’s budget. Here are some things to look for when purchasing your brand new coffee maker.

As with anything, the price of the coffee maker is a big factor. Depending on what you need, you can find some very good coffee makers for under $100. A lot of them are your basic coffee makers without many of the bell and whistles. But if you just want to have a good cup of coffee in the morning, they will do just fine.

Even if you decide to spend a little more on the coffee maker than you had planned, it is still a lot cheaper in the long run than buying your coffee at the local coffee shop. Also, brewing your own lets you make it just the way that you like it, weaker, stronger, hotter, cooler, it’s up to you.

If you are someone who doesn’t drink a lot of coffee, or you would like a quick cup, a single serve coffee maker may be for you. However, if you prefer more than one cup of coffee, the large capacity coffee maker might be the best choice. Large capacity coffee makers are much more cost effective, and much more convenient if serving groups of people.

The auto-on feature available in some large capacity coffee makers is very convenient. Simply set up your coffee maker the night before, and when you wake up, Voila! A full pot of coffee is waiting for you. As simple as that.

Charcoal Filter Feature

Having a charcoal filter in your coffee maker takes a lot of the chlorine taste out of the water, thus making your coffee taste better. If you find that your taste buds are sensitive to chlorine in your coffee, you may want to find a coffee maker with this feature.

Another option of course is to use filtered water outside of the coffee maker. An example of this would be to use water from a Brita filter or something similar to that. You will find that your coffee does taste much better when you filter the water.

Hot plate, Thermal Carafe or Neither

Initially, most of the drip coffee makers came with a hot plate which heated a glass carafe. Nowadays, another option is the thermal carafe, which is made of stainless steel, and is vacuum insulated. Coffee made in a thermal carafe lasts at it’s peak of freshness for about an hour. While coffee sitting on a hot plate lasts at it’s peak for about 20 minutes.

If you are someone who tends to drink their coffee quickly, then the glass carafe is probably fine. If you tend to take your time and savor your coffee, the thermal carafe may be right for you. Another feature that you may want to consider is the ” On Demand” type coffee maker. These coffee makers have a built-in carafe, you simply just push a button, and fill your cup. Manufacturers claim that the coffee will stay hot and fresh for 4 hours with this method.

                                                                                                                                                                                         Other Features to Consider

  • Brew strength control
  • Temperature control
  • Built-in coffee grinder
  • self-cleaning

Tip: “If you leave your coffee on the hot plate too long, it tends to get a burnt flavor to it.”

Best Drip Coffee Makers

Here, in no particular order, are the top drip coffee makers on the market today. You can’t go wrong with any of these, it all depends on which features you like, and your budget.

Criteria was based on quality, value, and overall customer satisfaction with the product. Various sources were used to determine these ratings.

No matter how good a product is, it will always have it’s detractors. In each review, I have included the top complaints about the item.

It also has a removable water reservoir for easy fill up, as well as a removable coffee reservoir for easy clean up. It’s programmable feature ensures that you wake up to a fresh coffee every morning.

Final Thoughts

Automatic drip coffee makers for the home have come a long way since their introduction in the early 70s. The features are endless, which makes the choice process somewhat daunting. Like I said before, choose the one that’s right for you. No use buying an expensive coffee maker with oodles of features that you are never going to use. Why waste your hard-earned money needlessly!

I hope that this article has helped find what you are looking for in that “perfect coffee maker.” Your best cup of coffee awaits. Cheers to a good brew!
